Davis on Doak Walker Award Watch List

Junior named to preseason watch list for top running back in the nation

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt junior running back Re’Mahn Davis was named to the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, an honor given annually to the top running back in the nation by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum.

It is the second consecutive selection for Davis on the Doak Walker Award watch list.

A native of San Francisco, Davis played 16 games at Temple during the 2019 and 2020 seasons and enrolled at Vanderbilt in January.

A Pro Football Focus First Team Freshman All-America selection in 2019, Davis finished his Owl career with 271 carries for 1,259 yards (4.6 yards/carry) and nine touchdowns to go along with 27 receptions for 243 yards (9.0 yards/catch) and two scores.

Davis played in Temple’s first four games in 2020, ending with 78 carries for 323 yards (4.1 yards/carry) and one touchdown. Last fall he also caught 12 passes for 62 yards (5.2 yards/reception). He capped the 2019 season with 193 carries for 936 yards (4.8 yards/carry) and eight touchdowns while averaged 78.0 rushing yards/game.

The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November. Three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced in November. The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.

The recipient will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards.

The award is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.

The Commodores are set to kick off the 2021 season hosting East Tennessee State at 7 p.m. on Sept. 4. Season tickets, mini plans and single-game tickets are available through the Vanderbilt ticket office.

Vanderbilt Stadium is expected to operate at 100 percent capacity for the 2021 campaign. Following revised CDC recommendations indicating that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks or physically distance, Vanderbilt updated many of its protocols effective May 25, including that gathering  size limits will be lifted for  outdoor gatherings.

Vanderbilt will continue to monitor public health guidance and rely on experts, including the CDC, Nashville Metro Public Health, and leaders at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the School of Nursing.
